Common Shrub Diseases
There are several kinds of diseases that are common among landscape plant life. All of these fungal diseases may first start to appear during the fall and winter months, as they show signs of winter desiccation.
Fire blight is caused by the bacteria Erwinia amylovora. Plants that are infected with this disease display leaves, twigs, stems and fruits that are brown, or black in appearance, eventually developing a “shepherd’s crook.” This disease affects up to 130 species in the Rosaceae family, including apple and crabapple, cotoneaster, firethorn, hawthorn, mountain ash and pear.
Fungi found in the genera Phompsis, Diplodia or Coryneum can cause needle, twig, or tip blights to occur on arborvitae, cypress and juniper species, producing a brown or grey discoloration. Fungal fruiting structures that look like pimples and are black in color can also develop on the needle surface.
Rhododendron species and azalea cultivars are susceptible to leaf spot disease that is caused by several species of fungi, including Cercospora species and Colletotrichum gloeosporioides. Leaves infected with Cercospora will form small, irregular brown or black spots, which will cause them to drop prematurely. Colletotrichum gloeosporioides also cause round, brown-spotted lesions that are visible on both the upper and lower leaf surface.
